Growing up in the shadow of Chernobyl

‘Kaleidoscope’ is a forthcoming exhibition of travel and documentary photography by Gail Ward, an SOS Children Regional Volunteer and professional photographer. The exhibition includes the photo-essay ‘Growing up in the Shadow of Chernobyl’, which potrays the difficult and traumatic stories and changed lives following the 1986 nuclear disaster.
Gail visited Belarus with SOS Children’s Villages and met children living with the aftereffects of the Chernobyl disaster. Although the reactor was in Ukraine, 70% of the radioactive dust from the nuclear explosion fell on Belarus, contaminating the air and the land. Twenty years later, whilst there is still serious ongoing health, social, psychological and economic repercussions, the Belarusian people’s attitude to everyday life is very determined.
The ‘Kaleidoscope’ exhibition will be showing from 10am-4pm, 25 - 30 September at the John Rank Gallery in Chichester, and will include a collection in aid of SOS Children.
