Colored-in areas represent a large, historic connection to Latin music
  • Light yellow states: large Latino populations of any kind
  • red: Tejano
  • dark blue area: California mission (approximate area of greatest cultural influence)
  • light green: Cuban music area
  • dark purple-blue: Puerto Rico
Small circles represent a musically significant population of a specific nationality of Latino
  • orchid (blueish purple): Puerto Rican
  • light green: Cuban
  • dark green: Central American
  • reddish-purple (cayenne): Hispanic American
  • salmon: Dominican
  • maroon: Colombian
  • dark gray: Paraguayan
  • carnation (pink): Brazilian
  • dark purple (plum): Dominican
There are other symbols as well:
  • teal box: Mexican, Guatemalan or other Central American marimba locale
  • Xs mark a large area that is home to a significant population of a specific Latino nationality, specified through the colour as above
